Fisherwomen in the Philippines

4400 USD financed in April 2016

In Novembre 2015, sparkles.lu was selected to participate to the International Bazar, a well-know charity event in Luxembourg. This is one of the biggest fundraising event in the country, gathering hundreds of volunteers and charities during a whole week-end, just before Christmas. In March 2016, all selected charities received a portion of the funds raised during the event and it was with great delightment that sparkles.lu got a whooping 4,000 EUR to help as many fisherwomen as possible in the Philippines! The funds have now been used to support 12 women entrepreneurs in the fishing sector. Indeed, many women are involved in this business: they fish by themselves and sell their catch on the market. Some also buy and sell dried fish. Most of the loans are used to buy new fish nets, fishing supplies, sometimes even a new engine. Our borrowers want to expand their business, to improve their livelihood, secure the future of their family and save money to send their children to college. One of our fishewomen is Rosalinda, mother of 5, living in Sagay. She needed 225 USD to buy fishing gear and other equipment. This was the 6th microloan of her carrier, all the other loans having been repaid with success. Rosalinda hopes that her hard work will help her reach her dream to save money, expand her business and continue to send her children to school.
